Black Bear Legal Services PLC

A.J. Ruben

I have been providing effective and innovative legal services in Vermont for more than 30 years. During this time, I have successfully advocated and litigated on behalf of hundreds of Vermonters facing rights violations, criminal charges, surviving crime, or engaged in efforts to improve our communities through non-profit and cooperative development. I am proud to be admitted to both Vermont State and Federal courts.

In addition to my legal work, my wife, Rebecca, and I have raised two children in our small-town community of Pittsfield, Vermont. We were also the founders of the Rutland Area Food Coop in 1995, the same year we got married. I have served on my town's Rescue Squad, School Board, and currently hold the position of Selectboard member.

I was born and raised in and around New York City, and I later moved to Santa Cruz, California for college, where I earned bachelor's degrees in politics and environmental studies with honors. Subsequently, I moved to Vermont for law school, where I earned a Cum Laude J.D. and a Summa Cum Laude master's in environmental law. My passion for justice and excellence in legal services has led me to travel extensively throughout North America, Mexico, Central America, Europe, and Asia. I am committed to making justice accessible to all people and continuing my pursuit of excellence in the legal field.
